Want to Learn About Nutrient Dense Foods?

Dr. Weston A. Price

Over 60 years ago Dr. Weston A. Price foresaw the decline in modern industrialized food nutrients and the deleterious effects it would have on modern health.

He studied cultures the world over and discovered that ancient cultures using traditional foods were healthier than most modern diet Americans.

Re: Status of Raw Milk Legislation

Dear Colorado Legislator:

Near the end of the 2010 legislative session, the Raw Milk Association of Colorado (RMAC) held a meeting with stakeholders to discuss its desire to amend the existing raw milk statute in response to consumer demand. Though RMAC is not currently planning legislation for the fall, we want to update you on our organization’s recent efforts in this challenging year.

As you may recall, contaminated milk at the Billy Goat Dairy in Longmont sickened 30 people this summer, causing the hospitalization of two children. We found the dairy to be out of compliance with existing RMAC standards for production and testing – as well as out of compliance with the basic provisions of the state raw milk statute.

RMAC was deeply concerned by both the illnesses attributed to this event and the dairy’s lack of focus on raw milk production safety. We spent the rest of the year cleaning house – developing further RMAC strategy and policy to reduce the chance of such incidents in the future.

In response to the summer’s contamination event, RMAC has recently:

  • Mandated more stringent requirements for member dairies, including
    • compulsory milk testing,
    • on-farm reviews for every new member dairy,
    • development of a food safety plan, and
    • increased safety standards for milking and production.
  • Increased consumer outreach and education; and
  • Increased new producer education efforts.

Though no amount of rules will eliminate the risk of future milk contamination – just as no amount of FDA regulation prevented illnesses attributed to the massive egg, beef, pork, and vegetable contamination in the conventional food system over recent years – RMAC takes milk safety very seriously.

Our surveys indicate there are currently nearly 20,000 herdshare owners in 80 RMAC member dairies in Colorado. We are proud that our members contribute nearly $8 million to our state economy, and know we will increase that number in years to come.

Thank you for your time. Feel free to contact me directly with any questions you might have about our efforts; I look forward to speaking with you soon.

Sincerely ,

Blair McMorran

Executive Director, Raw Milk Association of Colorado
